The Wrekin Historical Group formerlyTelford Historical and Archaeological Society (THAS).Is a registered charity (Charity number – 512397) was founded to exploit and promote the extensive Historical and Archaeological material which exists in the vicinity of Telford.
This aim is achieved by offering six meetings a year with guest lecturers. These are arranged on the first Thursday of each month (October to May inclusive). The talks cover a wide variety of themes relating to local or regional topics and a balance is achieved with national and general subjects.
Also during the year, usually in early summer and September, we hold two outings. In September we concentrate on a particular feature – i.e. canals, churches, stately homes etc. or areas such as the Clun Valley and Corvedale. On our summer excursion we venture further afield and have included visits to county towns, areas such as North and South Wales and excavations at Peterborough and Whitley Grange near Shrewsbury.
Here at the Wrekin Historical Group we think the well being of our members is paramount, that is why the December meeting for our members is an evening at which all members have a chance to let their hair down and enjoy each others’ company during a buffet, accompanied by a pre-Christmas tipple, and a light hearted quiz.

There is an opportunity to enjoy sharing each others’ particular interests by talking about, or showing slides or presentations of things which have interested us during the year; as varied as that fantastic holiday with its amazing buildings and mosaics or that surprising discovery of a little Saxon church hidden in the next county.
The January meeting is again the chance to satisfy the inner man. Our annual dinner, at a local venue, is a further opportunity to enjoy each others’ company when the hustle and bustle of Christmas is behind us.
Members who are interested in the more practical aspects of Archaeology and fieldwork are encouraged to develop their interests and take part in any projects we organise. Anyone willing to offer help to excavators as ‘trowel fodder’, or in a more specialised way, can be put in touch with archaeologists needing assistance.
The Wrekin Historical Group takes several journals and has a small library of books, leaflets and pamphlets, which are available for loan to members.
