AGM followed by "William Penny Brookes: man of Olympic vision" by the Wenlock Olympian Society

William Penny Brookes, a man of Olympian vision, established the Wenlock
Olympian Society (WOS) in 1850.

WOS and Brookes went on to spread the Olympian Games of Much Wenlock to
the rest of Shropshire, the whole of the country, to its ancient home of
Greece and then to the whole world.

William Penny Brookes had a passion for the benefits of exercise,
healthy bodies and minds, and his work carried on after his death.
His legacy being recognised by the world at the celebrations of London 2012.

As the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Baron de Coubertin said
in 1897:

"The Wenlock people alone have preserved and followed the true Olympian
traditions."

The Anglo-Saxon halls at Atcham were first identified from the air in the drought of 1975 but had never been investigated until in 2017, a small evaluation exercise was carried out on the site to investigate damage to the site. The lecture will present the results and current interpretation.

The City of Hereford is famous for the excavations that took place on its Anglo-Saxon defences and houses in the 1970s and 80s. What is less well known is that it contains many hidden standing historic houses of particularly early date. The talk will review the state of archaeological and historical research in the city, and look at new sources that have become available, like urban LiDAR.

A Journey into the history of a medieval hamlet: Results of the Tilley Timber Project by George Nash.

The hamlet of Tilley has a closely guarded secret - its historic built heritage. In 2015, local residents George Nash & Alastair Reid made an application to run an archaeological project that would delve into the history of the building stock and it's medieval timber-framing tradition.

George Nash talk will talk to us about the results of this project.

The Englishman's Castle is his home by Keith Cattell

The castle was strictly a private family fortification, literally bought over to this country by William the Conqueror as his 'secret weapon' to defeat and subdue the English. It has been with us ever since, with some of the most remarkable examples being built in the 19th century.

This talk by Keith Cattell is a look at our castles and how they have changed over the centuries.

The Adventurous History of Sabrina Sidney by Kate Isles

In 1769 Thomas Day, a member of the eighteenth century Lunar Society, embarked on a unique experiment to educate a twelve year old girl, whom he named Sabrina Sidney, according to the theories of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He hoped, in time to marry her, and therefore to fashion for himself a new breed of Enlightenment wife. This talk will look at Day’s unusual experiment in female education, marriage and motherhood.
